Private journal, 1831-1836.

Holograph diary kept by Newman during his service as Assistant Surgeon on several ships of the Royal Navy. More than half the volume covers November 1831 to October 1833, when Newman was stationed on HMS Cordelia in the Mediterranean. Entries detail shipboard life; various voyages from Malta to ports in Italy, Sicily, Greece, the Dardanelles and the Turkish Coast; sightseeing expeditions in Athens, Napoli di Romania (Nauplion), Cyprus, and other ports; events such as a ball in honor of Sir Walter Scott at Valetta and an outbreak of plague in the Balkans; and Newman's plans for further education as a surgeon and appointment with a different ship. The diary resumes in July 1834 with a summary of Newman's successful graduation from the Andersonian University at Glasgow and his appointment to the HMS Salamander, a paddle steamer based at Woolwich. Entries for the remaining two years concern Newman's efforts to gain the patronage of Sir William Burnett for a "fleet ship position;" his service on two packet ships and voyages in the North Sea and the West Indies; the contrasts in living conditions on various types of ships; and his appointment as surgeon to the HMS Inconstant. Several pages at the end of the volume, "Expense Book," list some transactions for the years 1831-35.
